The National Society of Hispanic MBAs named Ophelia Basgal, vice president of civic partnership and community initiatives for Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the 2009 Ultimate Hispanic Executive.

The ultimate Hispanic executive award is an honor presented annually by NSHMBA to an outstanding Hispanic leader who demonstrates strength, integrity and commitment to public service, education, and the advancement of leadership.

Ms. Basgal manages the responsibilities of being a corporate executive and a Hispanic community leader with strength, integrity, and grace. She is a relentless advocate for corporate social responsibility and community involvement. We are indebted to her for her leadership and for being a tremendous role model in our community. "We are presenting the Ultimate Hispanic award this year to an individual who is truly dedicated and determined to make a significant impact in the business world and the Hispanic community," states Steve A. Ramos, NSHMBA Interim CEO.

Through the nomination process, Ms. Basgal was described as an exceptional corporate officer who makes every effort to connect and motivate employees, with the ultimate goal of fostering community involvement. Under her leadership, PG&E has significantly increased its investments in the community through volunteerism, employee giving, and its charitable programs.

In her role at PG&E, Ms. Basgal is directly responsible for managing the company's charitable contributions program. She also oversees the employee volunteerism program for PG&E's 20,000 employees and community engagement programs and partnerships with community based organizations.

"It's an honor to be recognized for promoting community involvement and service at PG&E," said Basgal. "During these challenging economic times, it is particularly important that companies live up to their values and remain engaged in the communities they serve. Supporting leadership development in diverse communities is a priority for PG&E, a lifelong passion for me, and a key focus of my work at the company."

Prior to joining PG&E, Ms. Basgal served for 27 years as executive director of the Alameda County Housing Authority and was nationally recognized leader and frequent speaker on the nation's housing and community development policies and programs. She served on the bi-partisan Congressional Millennial Housing Commission and was member of several national housing organizations.

The Ultimate Hispanic Executive award will be presented to Ms. Basgal during the Executive Forum on October 9th at the NSHMBA 2009 Conference & Career Expo in Minneapolis, MN.
