At the World Congress on Information Technology, Sergio Garcia de Alba- Mexico’s minister of the economy- announced the launch of a campaign called “Mexico IT: Always near your business.” The campaign positions Mexico as “the leading IT powerhouse in Latin America” and aims to address the country’s emerging outsourcing industry. According to the Website (www.mexico-it.com), Mexico is training nearly 60,000 new IT engineers a year. Alba commented that Mexico is home to approximately 2,100 IT companies with decreasing demands for workers.  Mexico hopes that the campaign will encourage U.S. companies to expand their businesses further south. Alba commented that U.S. companies could employ Mexico’s Spanish-speaking workers to communicate with Spanish-speaking people worldwide. And though America is in the midst of the heated immigration debate, Alba explained that the campaign is a way for Mexico to develop their economy so that its citizens will not feel the need to immigrate to other countries. He stated, “We want our people in our country. We want our talent. We want the effect of our people in our country.” The early stages of the campaign will focus on Texas, California, New York, Florida, and Illinois.
