Third Annual Magazine Survey Names Top Corporate Supporters of Hispanic-Serving Engineering Schools

BALTIMORE, Md. — A survey conducted by Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology (HE&IT) magazine has revealed the top private sector supporters of the engineering schools at America's Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs). IBM Leads the List.

Research by HE&IT 's editors found there are 15 HSIs with engineering programs approved by ABET, the main accrediting body for these programs in the U.S. HE&IT then surveyed the engineering deans of these institutions to determine the 10 corporate and 10 government partners the deans feel contribute most to their schools' institutional missions.

"The universities we surveyed produce nearly a quarter of the nation's Hispanic engineers each year," says Tyrone D. Taborn, CEO of Career Communications Group Inc. (CCG), publisher of HE&IT.

"The organizations that provide these schools with financial, in-kind, and other vital support are showing a true commitment to diversity in the economically critical field of engineering. They are empowering the Hispanic community and helping the U.S. fill a 'talent gap' that threatens the nation's prosperity."

CCG's Taborn points out that, "Hispanics represent 12.5 percent of the total U.S. population in the country and is set to grow to 18 percent by 2025. But a mere 4 percent of U.S. engineers are Hispanic. The pipeline growth needs to be the key focus for organizations that want to make the difference." 

Survey respondents ranked IBM Corporation as a Top Supporter, making the Big Blue the leader of the pack. Lockheed Martin Corporation finished a close second with Boeing Company and Intel Corporation both ranked third in the survey. 

They were followed by Agilent Technologies, Cisco Systems, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, Hewlett Packard Company, Motorola, the Raytheon Company, Texas Instruments, and Valera each of whom ranked fourth.

Alps Automotive, American Honda, Aquila, Badia Spices, BellSouth, Brooks-Ransom Associates, Brunswick, Catalfumo Construction, Chevron Corporation, Citgo, Dell Corporation, E J Gallo Winery, Edison, Flint Hill Resources, FMC Food Tech, GE Aircraft Engines, Grundfos, Halliburton, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Lam Research Corporation, Lucent Technologies, Mentor Graphics, Miami Children's Hospital, Mobil Corporation, Nabih Youssef Associates, Northrop Grumman, Pelco, PG&E, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, SBC, Schulumberger, Southern California Edison, Sun Microsystems, Inc., Sunrise Medical, Toyota, Trane, TRW, Transportation Technology Center, Inc., United Parcel Service, and VeriBest Inc.
